The Cretan outdoor museum “LYCHNOSTATIS” resides in Hersonissos, just minutes from the coastline. There are four primary collections in it: The Nature & Flora Collection includes gardens with fruit-trees, scented herbs, cacti, bushes, and plants, as well as Cretan stones and minerals.
Presentation of Cretan traditional life is included in the ethnographic collection. In the Folk Artist’s Gallery, the Open-Air Theatre, and the Exhibitions Room, there is a collection of art including the works of folk artists. Equipment from earlier, pre-industrial technology collections. A variety of educational programmes are organised by the museum, and its audiovisual department creates videos, CD-ROMs, and DVDs that are shown every day in the multimedia & conference room.
Additionally, it contains a cafe and a museum store. The Museum received an award from the University of Crete in 1997 for its ecological initiatives, and it was nominated for the 2010 European Museum of the Year Award. Daily guided tours of “LYCHNOSTATIS” are available.
